why are all my shots shown with an open club face/

I ALMOST NEVER SLICE BUT WITH THIS GAME, I HAVE TO ADDRESS THE BALL WITH AN EXTREMELY CLOSED CLUB TO SHOW A SQUARE CLUB FACE AT IMPACT.  IT'S NOT EVEN CLOSE.

I've noticed that at the beginning of a session my optishot reads irons through 3-wood correctly. After about half a round it starts to give my 3-wood 145-153mph swing speeds and slice. Irons fly a bit longish too.

I have a quite old computer and I think it problem might be related someway to that. Maybe optishot keeps increasing it's RAM-memory take and at some point my computer just doesn't have enough power to perform correct calculations. I didn't have this problem with the older version of optishot. Maybe the never version is running heavier.

I have had many problems since I downloaded the 2.5 upgrade that I never had before. Most of them can be improved by exiting the program, shutting down my laptop and restarting. These problems include excessive swing speed and yardages, slow motion ball travel on the screen, balls flying into water when there was no water in the area followed by the program freezing requiring me shut down the laptop to proceed. My open club face problem improved on my irons by changing the offset to 0.200 but this did not help the driver or 3 wood. I am a beginner at golf and having only played 3 times at a course I don't really know if opti-shot is right or wrong. I have shot 70 rounds and as many balls on the driving range on opti including one round at 1 under par but usually do terrible at the course. I wish opti required you to be the right height off the ground when playing without a ball because that is my problem at the course.

I have made all adjustments as recommended and still getting odd results, my conclusion is the update is at fault.

Phil,

could you please explain a little further. What radar are you using? What is the percentage of 'big difference' and 'right on'? And how big are those differences? I would be very interrested in your findings.

I don't think that the Optishot club would help much. Just make sure that you tape your present club heads properly. I found that the silver strip should  be 1 to 1.5cm with a length of about 7cm, and black (nonreflective) tape over the rest.

So I set up my radar with the Optishot.  Sometimes I saw a big difference and sometimes it was right on and others it was off.  Yes my lighting is correct and the room environment is like it is suppose to be.  I guess I could go out and spend money on the optishot golf club but I would rather deal with what I have then to hope that "their golf club" will fix my issue.

I have found the same results with my woods, adjusting both speed and distance to 85% produces the most accurate results. With the occasional wild slice or hook with excessive distance. I find this happens when I hook , or get stuck in my downswing. For the most part I see 5.8 degrees open in all my woods, even if I close the face slightly.

I have a Medicos swing speed meter, and have used it to help me adjust the woods. I will be curious to see what results Phil gets with his radar.

Has anyone tried to export their swing statistics? I tried, but when I tried to forward the file to DancinDogg I received an error message. When I tried to open the file it was empty.

I ordered a swing speed radar the other day to compare it and optishot. I will set it up next to the pad and compare them. I will let you know how it works out

Let us know how your tape worked out and if you have pictures that would be great

Kevin,

I tested it out further: As with you, the irons show the correct distance. As for the woods, I have to adjust the speed to between 80 and 85% whereas 85% still sometimes gives unrealistically long shots. I will carry on fine-tuning on each wood as I play.

I found the solution for these random hooks and slices: On my woods so far I had a silver reflecting tape on the leading edge and nonreflecting black tape behind. Today I tested black tape on the leading edge, then a 2cm strip of silver, and then black tape again. So for the infrared diodes, the leading edge is no longer curbed and measuring of the face angle is very much more accurate. Now the shape of my shot is much more like in real life. And if I do slice or hook, then I have felt it in my wrists even before the screen tells me.

Next, I will do some testing as to the optimum width of the silver tape.

@ Whuober

I uninstalled Optishot 2.5 including the hidden files, and updated my drivers for the video card, and now my irons are back to normal. My woods continue to show excessive speed and distance, with drives of 350 yds+, and 3 wood that goes 278 yds. You might want to try reloading the software, and than adjusting the woods to correct for the excessive speed and distance. Let me know how that works out for you. Thanks for your input on the problem as Dancin Dogg would have me believe that only two of their customers are having any issues with the new upgrade.

@Kevin

Yes, I whitnessed the same: before, my shot distances were like in true life. With 2.5 they suddenly are 10 to 20% longer, and so are the clubhead speeds.  And especially with the driver I get uncontrollable hooks and slices, that I did not have before the upgrade. But in the next days I will do some testing and try to adjust this in the club settings.

I am having a lot of issues with the new 2.5 upgrade, all my clubs are slicing, and my driver is going 350 yards with a swing speed of 140 mph. Is anyone else having this issue since the upgrade?

One possible cause of very strange inaccurate swing results is if you accidently push the h key on your key pad which changes your swing to left handed.

I just received my optishot this morning. I set up my ping irons and taylormade driver and 3 wood. After some time on the range I have my clubs setup very nicely. The misses I see in the game reflect my real misses on the course. So far Im completely satisfied with the product. Even with the R11, if I turn it over it hooks like crazy, If I leave it open it slices. It seems to be reading shots very well for me.

I just received my Optishot and seem to be having the same problem. When I test slowly with with an open and closed club face it seems to work but when I go to a full swing - even when I try to over compensate it shows me open. Somewhere in the instructions, it refers to using a highly reflective club. My irons are TaylorMade Rocketballz and they have a dull grayish finish. I'm wondering if this will be a problem. I'm headed to The World Golf Hall of Fame this weekend and will be taking a lesson at their PGA Tour Academy. I think they'll be putting me on a monitor and it will be interesting to see what it shows.

after months of enjoyment(working around the swing path readings when not using a ball, and inaccurate, slow swing speed results), my optishot has seemingly hit the wall and stopped working anywhere close to properly.  most of the issues that I used to only have when taking full swings without a ball, began to happen with the ball (very open face 10+ degrees).  Sure, I could set the offset to something unrealistic to get a ball flight that looks normal, but then you would really have no idea what was an authentic open face, and what was just the swingpad bugging out, which defeats the entire purpose of owning one of these units.   This is the difference between a video game and a simulation.  My warranty is up, and I'm left to either buy a replacement swing pad on it's own for 150-200 bucks(refurbished) or just give on optishot.  This is a shame because I believe that when this product works properly, it is a great golf educational tool, however I think optishot needs to acknowledge that some of their swing pads may be defective instead of blaming lighting conditions or clubs, because if theres one thing that didn't have any affect on results it was different types of light bulbs, shadows, sunlight, or darkness.  I successfully used this product in a completely dark room, a well lit room, with a light over it, etc with no noticeable differences.  It's clear that some people are getting the optishot not working as designed right out of the box with either swing speeds that max out at 65mph or widly open faces and some of us deal with it by making adjustments in the settings.  I don't like the idea of telling the software how good I am, as the only reason I bought it was for it to tell me.  I don't remember Roger Maltby not being able to take full practice swings without a ball.

Great product/concept, but needs to be refined to insure product quality and consistency

All answer from this thread pointing to the lighting enviorment.  For a 399$ units, we need change the lighting in the room. This is not easy for lots of us. My Optishot is against a large windows wall, and I have to use curtain to limit the light enter the house, and  I end up to put a table reading light in one kind of  stand and pointing to the optishot. So far, the result is accaptable at night, but still not day time. Any suggestions?

I've been struggling with the same exact phenomenon.  Glad I see at least I'm not alone.

It doesn't seem to matter what light I'm in, I'm 10 to 20 degrees open, even if I shut face down.

(I pretty much stripe it on the REAL range)

I can't even play any of the courses. I'm wondering if the unit is defective or out of calibration.

I'll try creating a custom club set with an off-set to fake it out.

I had a similar issue, but mine came down to lighting. I ended up putting a light right over the unit to address the issue. I think the shadows were causing the sensors issues in getting the reflection off the club.

You could also try to adjust the offset on the clubs to see if that helps. Create a custom club set (if you haven't already) and adjust the "Offset" on one of the clubs to see if that helps. I have spent a lot of time on the practice range messing with the settings to get the clubs to read to my normal playing results.

I've had a similar problem when I try to swing without a ball, if I take full swings (anything above a pitch shot) I receive an infinitely open club face.  Swing pad is otherwise functional, all lights work, tested in various lighting, grass mat checked but still receive the same problem.  Would be nice to be able to take swings without a ball and receive some sort of useable feedback.

This continues to happen to me... I have tried lights all on all off, no shadows, all seems to be perfect. I can't see any grass padding out of place... The only way I can get a straight shot is to use about a 1/3 or slower swing with any club. I know I tend to have a bit of a slice, but with optishot telling me EVERY shot is 10 degrees open or more, I have lost confidence in this thing. And am considering a refund.

I had the same issue, after reading the ddg reply, I checked my unit.  All the lights were as they should be, but the grass padding was offset and looked to be partially blocking the lights at the very edge.  After removing the pad and realigning it where the light bar was in the center of the hole in the pad, my shots are now showing to be more toward straight face.

Rclem5697 - Our apologies for the confusion. It should read "all of the other bulbs should alternate between being dark and glowing faintly red".

"Every other bulb" can be interpreted both ways!

I had this same problem and knew I wasnt open faced every shot. I went in and customized a clubset changing the offset on every club. works great now I am extremely happy with this product. although after reading the above comment from dancing dogg I am going to have to call because every other sensor is  glowing lite red not every one 8 on front sensor and 8 on back sensor. that may be the problem . will get repost once I find out

The most common cause of this kind of shot result is having the wrong lighting in the room for OptiShot.  So, the first thing I would suggest you do is check, and if need be, fix the lighting in the room.  Information on proper lighting may be found by following the link below.

http://helpdesk.dancindogg.com/entries/20371003-installation-environment

Another possibility is that OptiShot is having a hard time reading a particular driver.  We have found that drivers with a smooth and reflective bottom will yield more accurate results with OptiShot than those with an irregular and non reflective bottom.

Still another possibility, though uncommon,  is that the Swing Pad has been damaged.  If your lighting is properly set up and you are still having an issue try running OptiShot with the Swing Pad connected and turn off or at least dim all the lights in the room and observe the infrared sensors.  With the exception of the Green/Red status light, every other bulb should glow faintly red.  If some are out that should be lit then the Swing Pad should be replaced.
